Coddiwomple - Two Piece Abstract Painting
Coddiwomple - Two Piece Abstract Painting
Abstract art to me is about trusting yourself even when you don’t know where you are going. One of my 2 piece abstracts is titled: “Coddiwomple” which is a word I first saw on the back of a camping trailer while I was driving from Missouri back to my hometown in NC after teaching. It had a definition underneath the word which I thought at first was made up by the owners of the camper. I kept repeating it in my head after I saw it and it resonated with me and what I am currently doing in my work…which is truly finding my way but being flexible in that journey. Coddiwomple means-“To travel in a purposeful manner towards a vague destination”. My work is deliberate, yet flexible. I want to explore and master my craft, telling my story painting by painting but I’m open to where that leads me. I want to enjoy this journey, not be boxed into what some may expect of me or have rigid rules for myself. I want to be a lifelong learner and to be able to share my experiences with myself. Abstract painting teaches me to be open to the experience and to accept the unexpected and learn how to make that work to my advantage.
